Dear GEC Community,
Our hearts go out to our entire community and extended network of friends and loved ones that have been affected by the wind storm and fires wreaking havoc throughout Los Angeles County. We mourn the loss of human life, homes, businesses, pets and wildlife, treasured natural spaces, houses of worship and historic landmarks. We want to extend our gratitude to all of the fire fighters, first responders and utility workers risking life and limb to battle the blazes, rescue and protect people/pets/communities, clear downed trees and restore power. We thank our Glendale public servants, city staff and local non profits for their support and good communication—for picking up our trash during the windstorm, collecting downed trees, keeping our water safe and providing shelter during the storm. One thing this terrible event has reminded us, is that a big part of our resiliency is how we come together to support one another through hard times.
These fires remind us that the impacts of climate change are here now. We must budget, plan and build now for a more resilient future. This includes things like capturing water when it falls in those years when we get torrential rainfall (in preparation for seasons of drought), adding solar and backup battery storage to our most critical infrastructure and community gathering centers (such as the Pacific Community Center), and creating strong community support networks to help one another (and our most vulnerable) through tough events. This is exactly what Glendale’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) is for, and why it deserves the support of our community, City staff and elected officials. When the draft plan is up for discussion and adoption, we hope you will remind our public officials why it matters, and support the efforts of our various City departments who are collaborating with the Office of Sustainability and Rincon Consultants to build an effective plan that targets our investments effectively. The draft plan can be found here.
Here are resources and ways to help that are available now. We hope will be useful for our community. We hope everyone will be safe and continue to support one another through this very difficult time.
