Many thanks to all of the GEC members that came out to pick up litter around Downtown Glendale on Saturday, June 28, 2025! 19 volunteers spent three hours collecting several bags of trash in the area around Glendale City Hall. The team collected many cigarette butts, which are a significant form of litter that often end up in storm drains and ultimately out into our water ways. Cigarette filters are made of a type of plastic called cellulose acetate which doesn’t biodegrade and can persist in the environment for years, leaching harmful chemicals. This reminded us that it would be nice if places of business had ash trays outside where people smoke!
We had a great time doing a nice thing for our community with friends and neighbors. GEC thanks the City of Glendale for all of their support. Special thanks to Onnig Bulanikian (Director of Community Services and Parks), Daniel Hernandez (Director of Public Works), Chris Peplow (Parks Service Manager) and Dean Minor, Anthony Luna and Ricardo Falco of Integrated Waste Management.
We hope to organize our next trash pickup event around a school in South Glendale. If you’d like to participate, please join our Action Network email list to find out about the next event and contact us if you would like to be part of the planning!
