GWP Launches Off-Peak EV Charging Rebate Program

Glendale Water & Power’s new OFF-PEAK EV CHARGING REBATE PROGRAM has launched!

GWP is offering a new EV load-shifting program from Sagewell, which incentivizes Glendale EV drivers to charge their vehicles overnight on weekdays between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. the next day and any time on the weekend, in exchange for a monthly incentive of $8. It will help Glendale reduce peak evening loads, which in turn means potentially less investment in, and use of, fossil fuels. Residents enroll by completing a one-time application which takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and the EV’s charging schedule handles the rest, without any special hardware or separate meter needed. Please consider enrolling in this program if you own an EV and be part of the Clean Energy Solution.  And get a monthly incentive to boot! Visit the program website to learn more and enroll.

How the OFF-PEAK EV CHARGING REBATE PROGRAM works:
Enjoy 1,300 miles of free driving per year by earning a monthly $8 incentive.

The Off-Peak EV Charging Rebate program encourages Glendale EV drivers to charge their vehicles overnight on weekdays between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. the next day and any time on the weekend in exchange for a monthly incentive of $8. All battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles are eligible to participate in this program, and customers can enroll multiple EVs to their account.

Incentives are paid out yearly every January. You have the option to receive payments through PayPal, Venmo, or a paper check.

To enroll in the program you will need to:

  • Have an active Glendale Water and Power residential electric account
  • Charge your electric vehicle using a Level 2 charger or 240-volt charging cable
  • Charge overnight on weekdays between 9 p.m. and 12 p.m. the next day
  • Charge any time during weekends

There are times when you may have an urgent need to charge your EV. With the Off-Peak EV Charging Rebate, you may charge up to three times each month outside of the periods listed above without losing your incentive for that month.

Incentives are calculated monthly and paid once per calendar year. You may choose to receive the incentive via PayPal, Venmo, or check. Electronic payments can only be issued to the email address (PayPal) or phone number (Venmo) provided on your application.

GWP PRESS RELEASE:

GLENDALE, California – Glendale Water & Power (GWP), in partnership with Sagewell, Inc. (Sagewell), is pleased to announce the launch of a new residential program for electric vehicle (EV) drivers called the Off-Peak EV Charging Rebate program. This program incentivizes EV owners to charge their vehicles overnight on weekdays between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. and any time on the weekend in exchange for a credit of $8 a month paid out once per year. The incentive is estimated to offer 1,300 miles of free driving per year!

Residents enroll by completing a one-time, 7-minute enrollment application, and the EV’s charging schedule handles the rest. This program shifts electric vehicle load to off-peak hours without any special hardware or separate meter needed. Participants will program their vehicles to charge during off-peak hours, and software algorithms developed by Sagewell will confirm off-peak charging compliance from AMI “smart meter” data. Enrollment requires an active GWP residential electric account, and a Level 2 charger or 240-volt charging cable provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

Off-peak EV charging helps relieve energy demand and utilizes available overnight capacity within GWP’s electric system. This then helps with reliability and benefits all GWP customers. With this program, other communities have seen participants charge off-peak at least 90% of the time, efficiently integrating EV load with the distribution system.

“This program is one part of GWP’s transportation electrification efforts. It will help us keep our grid more reliable by encouraging and incentivizing residents to charge during off peak hours,” stated GWP General Manager, Mark Young. “It will also help promote EV adoption among Glendale residents and magnify the benefits of EVs in our City,” added Young.

The Off-Peak EV Charging Rebate program is offered at other utilities under the Bring Your Own Charger® (BYOC) name, and has received awards from the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) and American Public Power Association (APPA).

Pasi Miettinen, CEO of Sagewell added, “We are very excited to launch the program with Glendale Water & Power. GWP is in a unique position to reach a large number of EV drivers, and to shift a significant amount of EV charging demand to off-peak hours every day. This will reduce the stress on the distribution system while delivering very high customer satisfaction scores and a predictable customer experience valued by EV drivers.”

EV customers can also inquire about GWP’s Time-of-Use rates to also maximize the benefits of charging at off-peak hours.

Interested Glendale EV drivers can enroll in the program by visiting https://www.bringyourowncharger.com/gwp-home.
