Establishing the Glendale Sustainability Commission

City staff are looking at how to set up a new Sustainability Commission for Glendale, after Councilmember Dan Brotman made the proposal and it was seconded at City Council. The staff report will be presented at the August 25 Council meeting.

GEC is concurrently doing its own research so it can make recommendations for robust impact and citizen participation. Appointees, scope, and activities of the new commission are all important factors.

Glendale Sustainability Officer

Earlier this year, Glendale posted the job opening for the City’s first Sustainability Officer, who will report to City Manager Yasmin Beers and ideally coordinate with the Sustainability Commission. Candidate interviews are going on now and we understand the City expects to have someone on board in the next few months. Here is what they will be expected to do when hired:

“Under general direction and in cooperation with the City’s operating departments, this management position performs complex, specialized and professional level analytical, administrative, programmatic, and policy related duties within the Office of Sustainability, including assisting in the coordination of projects and programs related to the City’s sustainability goals.”

The Sustainability Commission can work with the Sustainability Officer and the City Council to bring environmental issues to the forefront of decision making.
